Original Acrylic:
"Thar Headstudy"

The Thar is an amazing animal - I think we are fortunate to have them in New Zealand, but there are some who would not agree.

This is a species of Himalayan goat - Hemitragus jemlaicus, and the male of the species has a huge mane of long hair on his neck and shoulders that reaches to the knees. The average adult bull would weigh about 200lb. The skin is very thick indeed, especially of the male (1/8-1/4 inch).

The female differs from all other goats in having four functional teats.

As to be expected they are extremely surefooted and inhabit rocky high country of the South Island. They were introduced between 1904 and 1909.

Once again, there is lobbying for the complete destruction of this species in New Zealand.     I am not convinced that all the arguments and evidence for this hold water, and I sincerely hope that total annihilation of these truly magnificent animals does not take place.

Acrylic on Board. Painting size is 20in x 28in.

Sold - Wellington, NZ.
