In this painting, the shape of the plant is simplified into a symbolic statement about the unfolding power of the fern. The strong curves of the fern's fiddlehead stand out against the dark background.

Looked at in closeup, there is a great deal of power in the developing frond of a fern, and that is one of the things that fascinates me about ferns.

This fern - Blechnum capense - can be found on dry banks throughout New Zealand.

It forms a great feature, as its adult fronds can reach 2 feet in length.
