On the West Coast of the South Island, the spine of mountainous country that runs the full length of the island lies very close to the coast. The land rises steeply and the rivers are cut deeply into the mountains.
This is the Gunn Range viewed from the bed of the Butler River, which is a tributary of the Whataroa, about 2 days out from civilisation.
